Installation

The Chrome, Firefox, and Edge versions are on their way to the stores. Install links will appear here once they go live.

How It Works

GoDark doesn't get access to any website when you install it; Applies to decides which sites it asks your browser for access to. Once you allow access, pages of those sites that are already open turn dark right away, without a reload. While a page loads, a dark background goes down first, so there's no white flash.

If a site has its own dark theme, GoDark leaves it as is so it doesn't get darkened twice. When a page is darkened, a mark appears on the toolbar icon.

Home Page

Click the toolbar icon to open GoDark. It opens in a popup by default, and you can change Click to open to Side panel under Settings → General. From top to bottom, the home page has three cards:

  • Power — When sites turn dark
  • Applies to — Which sites turn dark
  • Mode & appearance — How sites turn dark

Power

  • Off — Pauses dark mode on all sites
  • Always — The default. Sites stay dark at all times
  • System — Sites turn dark only while your system is in dark mode
  • Scheduled (Pro) — The card shows a daily start and end time that you can edit right there. The period can run past midnight, for example from 22:00 to 7:00 the next morning

Applies to

  • Allowlist — Only sites in the list turn dark, and each site needs its own access
  • Blocklist — Every site turns dark except those in the list
  • All sites (Recommended) — Every page you open turns dark

The last two need access to all sites. Until you allow it, the card shows an Allow all sites button; click it and allow access in the prompt your browser shows.

Each list is kept separately and doesn't affect the other; only the list for the option you've chosen is used. To add a site, open it and click Add this site to the right of the list. If the site is already in the list, the button reads Remove this site; you can also click the × next to a site in the list to remove it. If sites were added on another device and don't have access on this one yet, the list shows how many; click Allow to give them access.

Mode & Appearance

  • Mode
    • Smart — Recolors smartly and keeps colors natural
    • Invert — Inverts the page, so it works on any site. Choose it when a site looks wrong
  • Appearance
    • Presets — Default, Soft, Pure black (Pro) and Eye care (Pro). Click one to apply it
    • Brightness and Contrast — 50 to 150, default 100
    • Warm tone (Pro) — Adds a warm tint that's gentler on the eyes at night
    • Background (Pro) — Choose from a few dark colors; applies in Smart mode only

Next to the card's title, you choose which settings you're editing: Default applies to all sites, while This site (Pro) applies only to the current site and overrides the default mode and appearance. A site's appearance starts from the default appearance. The two are saved separately, so switching doesn't erase the other. When you open GoDark, the card shows the settings that are actually in effect on the current site.

Settings

Features

Per-site mode & appearance lists the sites with their own mode or appearance. Each entry shows the site's mode and appearance, and anything not set for the site is marked as following the default. Click the button at the end of a row to reset it to default. When This site is selected on the home page, you can also get here by clicking View site settings.

Storage

Once your own storage is set up, Power, Applies to and its lists, the default mode and appearance, per-site settings and general settings are synced to your own storage, so all your devices share the same setup. Site access belongs to the current device only and isn't synced.

Under Settings → Storage, enter your S3-compatible bucket, endpoint, and access credentials step by step, then click Test & Save. Once the test passes, turn syncing on.

When you save, the browser asks whether the extension may reach that storage address; the connection works only after you allow it.

Your storage credentials never leave this device. Without a storage configured, everything stays on this device and no feature is affected.

FAQ

A page didn't turn dark

  • Check whether Power is set to Off, or whether it's outside your scheduled hours or your system isn't in dark mode
  • Check Applies to: with Allowlist, the site must be in the list; with Blocklist, it must not be. If the card shows Allow all sites or Allow, follow the prompt to allow access
  • Built-in browser pages, extension store pages and the PDF viewer can't be darkened
  • A site with its own dark theme is left as is

A site's colors look wrong

  • Next to the Mode & appearance title, select This site, then choose Invert. On the free plan, you can change the default mode to Invert

The side panel shows "Reopen extension"

  • After you switch tabs, the side panel may not be able to read the current site. Click that button to close the side panel, then click the toolbar icon again
